What I Have Been Up To
So, I haven’t been able to write a new blog post in a while, and that’s because I’ve been busy with a new adventure: motherhood! Yes, that’s right, in June 2019 we welcomed a beautiful baby boy into our family. The whole story and all the details, I will share over a variety of posts, but let me give you the basics in this update.
In mid-November 2018, we moved out of our apartment and in with a friend, to rent her upstairs. It was a great positive energy change and we didn’t have that big rent payment to worry about any longer. Seattle area rent rates are very high, and we have no rent control. We were paying about $2100 for our apartment, and it was simply no longer sustainable to our budget at the time.
By Thanksgiving of that year, I suspected I was pregnant. This was an unplanned blessing, and with me being 41 at the time, was indeed quite unexpected. Come to find out, because we had gone to a plant-based (vegan) lifestyle in February 2017, I had restored my fertility without consciously trying to do so! I found a fabulous duo of midwives who supported me staying vegan during pregnancy. I learned so much about supportive herbs and supplements from them, as well as they helped prepare me for my goal of a natural birth.
When the time came for birth, I was folding laundry as my water broke. Our son’s arrival would be 3 weeks earlier than anticipated. With the help of my midwives, and an amazing doula, I gave birth at sunrise the following morning, in the comfort of home. Relying on meditation and sound, I was able to push through the contractions, and had an absolutely magical birth experience.
The first 3 months of caring for baby were tough. As prepared as I felt about birth, I felt equally unprepared for his crying and feelings of powerlessness it brought up in me. I was a zombie, getting about 2 hours of sleep a night. Finally, our daily routine started to gel, and by month 4, I was able to get about 6 hours a night. I was feeling back to myself, and really able to be present and connected to our son.
Now, at 7 months old, our son is absolutely amazing, healthy, and huge (90% or higher for height). He is a joy to watch grow up. I am still working around his schedule, and so I have not returned to a full workload quite yet. During this process, Spirit had advised us to keep very private about it, and you will not see our son’s name or photo posted here or on social media. But, we have been given the go-ahead to share some of our journey, and there is so much I learned in the last 15 months. As my schedule permits, I will write about the many life lessons I learned, and share the resources and practices that worked for me in upcoming blog posts and events.
The first event I have to announce is the Healthier, Sexier You series, where I talk about what I did (accidentally) to restore/improve my fertility at the “advanced maternal age” of 41. Even if you are not looking to become pregnant, there are many other great talks from people incorporating more fruits & veggies into their life. I hope you will check it out! I would love to hear in the comments any ideas you have for me to write about, or questions you have about my experiences in the last few months. It doesn’t even need to be connected to baby/parenting topics. For those of you reading this who do know baby’s name, I would please ask that you keep his name out of the comments, and use baby or little one instead. Thank you.
