This is the description of one of the 16 Past Life Patterns. These patterns were developed by Karen Downing, in order to help you understand how past life experiences affect your life today. Each person carries 3 to 5 past life patterns in varying levels of influence. By understanding your unique mix of patterns, you can more easily build up your strengths and transform your challenges. The Merchant Description – The Merchant understands the world around them by equating things and people with their perceived value. This perceived value is based on both emotional value and monetary value. The Merchant is comfortable understanding their life in this way due to many past life experiences where they were involved in trade and commerce. The Merchant feels most confident while negotiating a deal, researching, dealing with numbers, or assessing something’s (or even someone’s) value. Deep down the Merchant has a fear of going broke, and of having their resources or livelihood stolen from them.
The Merchant is adept at business transactions, buying and selling, mathematics, patterns and numbers. The Merchant is usually a technology whiz, and loves to have the newest gadgets. Often times, the Merchant can seem aloof or even distant to others, however they are simply lost in thought with some calculations or problem to tackle. The Merchant is here now to learn the importance of relationships, intimacy and compassion in the equation of life.
Some of the typical past life experiences of the Merchant are: working in trade or commerce, being a merchant or business person, being an entrepreneur, working in banking, accounting or the stock market. If you assess the world around you through numbers and value, then you hold the past life pattern of the Merchant.
Expression of the Merchant Pattern in Your Life Now – The Merchant loves to talk about numbers, statistics, sales, and business deals. They like to be involved in many social activities, but will view social activities as a way to network and make deals. Even with all of their knowledge and business savvy, the Merchant fears that another person will try to take advantage of them in a bad business deal. The Merchant definitely likes to do their due diligence before proceeding with any partnerships. However, if they are in sales, they are not as discerning when it comes to whom they will sell to.
If you express the Merchant pattern, you will need to balance your connection with numbers and your connection to people. You need people in your life to make your numbers work. But, you have to learn to let go of the tendency to try to need numbers in your life to make people work. This equation is one-way only.
The Merchant, in their past life situations, based their self-worth on their business holdings and business strategy. Many times, because they have earned large sums of money, they have been the target of theft, deception, kidnapping, arson and other similar criminal acts. This creates a belief within the Merchant that their possessions make them a target for others, and they feel that others will lie, steal or cheat to obtain what the Merchant has earned through hard work. Because of this inner belief, the Merchant is very suspicious of who they will give their money to. On the other hand, the Merchant will accept money from nearly anyone. This makes them great in sales jobs. However, in other job roles, the Merchant will have trust issues. They will have a tendency to mistrust others, without any evidence. This can make team collaboration very tricky. The Merchant is here to look at the relationship of people with money and resources, not just to view people as resources.
There are two ways that the Merchant theme reveals itself; The Timid Merchant and the Crafty Merchant. If you resonate with The Merchant pattern, you might discover that you can possess qualities of one, or even both, of the ways that The Merchant is expressed. Often in one area of life you can feel one way, and in another area of life feel another way.
The Timid Merchant – The Timid Merchant prefers to hide behind their numbers. They are not extremely social, but tend to communicate about their work, projects, finance, numbers or research. To many others, this communication style can make the Timid Merchant seem like they do not care. However, they do care about others, they just show their care by numerical means. If you are someone who hides behind numbers, knows lots of random facts, and thinks accounting is fun, then you showcase the past life pattern of the Timid Merchant. The Timid Merchant’s biggest lesson is to step out from behind the numbers of life, and experience more of the non-measurable dynamics such as love, joy and compassion.
The Crafty Merchant – The Crafty Merchant is the perpetual salesperson. It does not matter where they are or who they are with, they will feel a need to discuss whatever project or money making scheme they have going on. This is a skill set that eventually will land them many sales, but usually not as many friends. The Crafty Merchant has a deep down fear of being hoodwinked, so in an attempt to gain the upper hand, they will be prone to use questionable tactics to beat out any competition. The Crafty Merchant also uses numbers and statistics to get their way. It is not their fault if they obscure some of the facts in doing so, as they think you should have done the research too! If you are someone who talks about finance and commerce frequently, has a deep fear of being duped and spends a lot of your spare time socializing, then you showcase the past life pattern of the Crafty Merchant. The Crafty Merchant’s biggest lesson is to release the need to get one over on others before they can do the same in return. The Crafty Merchant is here to learn to trust.
